BACKGROUND

The development in different arenas of life has widened the gap between the poor people’s basic needs and their ability to fulfill them. Estimating poverty is difficult because of lack of data availability and issues of data quality. However, according to

World Bank 65.5% of the population of Pakistan has livelihood of $2 a day. Poverty has hit hardest on Health and Education sectors both of which in turn reduce the prospects of good livelihood which completes the vicious circle.

  • According to World Bank :
    • Total Population (2011) : 187 million
    • Urban / Rural Ratio : 36/64
    • GNI per Capita : $970

(Gross National Income per head)

  • Inflation : 10.8 %

  • Our mission is to provide the best education to the under privileged by imparting knowledge, developing skills and inculcating values

    MISSION STATEMENT
  • The Bridge School will provide free access to Education. TBS stands for human dignity so as to make our society a better place

    VISION
  • TBS will operate with three core values, i.e., “Impartiality, “Independence” and “Accountability & Transparency”

    CORE VALUES

OPERATIONS

The Bridge School was inaugurated on Feb 05, 2012 in a rented building at Mughal Hazara Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauher, Karachi. Following the academic year of 2012-13, classes had started from March 1st, 2012 with a total of 60 students and now 220 students have been enrolled in Pre-Nursery, Lower Nursery, Upper Nursery, Grade I, Grade II, Grade III, Grade IV, Grade V, Grade VI, Grade VII and Grade VIII. More than 100 parents have registered in TBS to enroll the siblings of existing students but we do not have the capacity to accommodate them. The school charges a nominal fee of Rs 400 per month to cover all expenses including tuition, books, uniform and any other cost related to school. (This fee is being charged to ensure that students and parents attend the school dedicatedly and do not take the services for granted. This also avoids non-serious behavior.) There is absolutely no other fee charged to students. For students who cannot afford to pay, a discount of up to 100% is available. The current expense of these 203 students is Rs. 180,000 per month (cost break up in budgeting) whereas we are taking almost Rs. 70,000 per month in terms of tuition fees, the shortfall of Rs. 110,000 are meeting ourselves with the help of donations and selling used books collected as donations. We have inducted 15 teaching and one non-teaching staff members working on a “paid” status. The teachers are professionally trained and experienced with sound track record. Our immediate plan is to enroll 400 students.

LOCATION

The School is located in Mughal Hazara Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauher, Karachi. There are four ethnic groups which include Hazara, Gilgiti, Punjabi and Urdu who are living in this Goth for last one decade, whose earning fall from Rs. 9,000 to 15,000 per month with average number of four children. Majority comprises girls who cannot go to school because of two reasons (a) poverty, and (b) cultural issues.

Most of the families send their two to three children to private school and cannot afford to send the last child to any school, especially if she is a girl, because simply they cannot afford. The private schools in this area are charging between Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 per month in addition to registration fees, annual charges, computer fees etc.

ACADEMIC

We have adopted the Cambridge system and have three term-examinations in addition to three monthly assessments, to closely monitor the performance of Students and Teachers. After every term and monthly assessment, a parents and teacher meeting is scheduled to update the parents about the performance of their child and get the feedback of TBS performance. We have SMS facility through which we regularly inform about strikes, holidays, examination, and attendance and progress of child to the parents. If a student is absent for more than three days without information, strict disciplinary action is to take.

In TBS, computer classes both theory and practical are scheduled in the time table for Grade 1 to Grade IV students. Students are very enthusiastic to learn computers and they stay in the school even after school timings.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

TBS strongly believes in co-curricular activities. TBS is subscribed with various International educational organizations, early child learning programs, parenting advise i.e. Maker Movement, Best of Parenting etc. Through the Maker Movement, we give technical support to students of TBS in making the project of organization. e.g. Painting, Planting, Cleaning, Cooking, Moping etc. We regularly organize activities, usually every Friday, for example celebrating national and international days, visit to historical and picnic places to motivate children.

TEACHERS

Every six month TBS bears the cost of Two Teachers to send them to diploma course in Montessori Method offered by renowned Montessori Training Centre i.e. American Montessori Institute. They learn new concepts and Montessori Method of teaching and apply on daily basis. The success of quality education depends on the good quality of teachers. TBS organizes in-house training sessions, twice a week, to the junior teachers. They learn and grow by knowing the modern way of teaching.

We plan to hire a Psychologist, full time on paid status, to assess each and every child. Attention and care to each child will result in very strong sustainability.

We are facing this problem that many students age between 3 to 4 years are not willing to come to school. Some of them start crying or kept quiet. Special care to the child through Psychologist will make it possible for us to increase the attendance.

We shall develop through IT professional, friendly user computer software which shall provide the data e.g. attendance of both teachers and students, performance of teachers and students, time table, monthly and terms results, teachers and students personal information, accounts / ledger, activities etc.

SOCIETY

TBS lessens the financial burden of education and give opportunity to their child to become better human being and educated person. The awareness of the knowledge shall open the door of employment to them and thus they can change their socioeconomic class as well.

Eventually, we aim to spread awareness about education in the said area of Karachi and expand further to accommodate adjacent areas for the sake of betterment and an improved living standard.

The main output of TBS is to transform a child to become well-mannered and well behaved one. Every year TBS shall be transforming a sizeable number of students who motivate their parents, families, friends, and society at large. This is ongoing process, every year we are not only giving quality education to students but also giving them dream to change the environment and society.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

We do have monitoring and evaluation plan for students as well as for teachers. We are using the syllabus of Oxford University Press and New Century, they have teaching material and evaluation plan which they have provided to us.

We conduct surprise test regularly to find out the understanding level of child. The result of test gives us the actual picture of understanding of the related subject. Besides, we have our own internal monitoring system. We have printed academic calendars and strictly follow it. At the beginning of new session academic calendar gives to every child and teaching staff, the Principal and the management of TBS review and make sure to follow it. This calendar describes each and every activity on a daily basis supposes to be happening in the upcoming year. It also tells us the important days to be celebrated and holidays as well. Starting and ending dates of monthly assessments and terms are also clearly mentioned. Syllabus for the complete year also decides in the beginning of academic year.

Our SMS service helps us in monitoring the students; there is a tendency in our society that student instead of going to school, go to any park or roaming around on the street. Whereas their parents think they are regularly attending the school. If a student does attend the school for three days, TBS informs her/his parents through SMS.
